Bio-Narrative

Karl Koch's career is focused on the management concerns of the Information Age.  He is one the developers of "The Power Cycle"<tm>, a cyclical process for understanding management systems.  He has integrated this method of management to human learning systems, to change management, to personality types and to the process of integrating technical systems with human systems. Mr. Koch is the co-founder and principal officer of The MENTOR Group in Columbus, Ohio.

 He completed his Master of Arts degree in Sociology at the University of Cincinnati in 1974.  At that time he also completed training as an associate of the firm Management Design, Inc., a management and organizational development company.  He continued in an Associate status with them until 1985. 

 From 1974 to 1983 he was an employee of the State of Ohio.  From 1974 to 1980, under LEAA grants, he developed an eight-state regional training program in organized crime and white collar crime investigative techniques.  During this time he was a participant in national organized crime conferences and in national planning meetings on training in its investigation.  From 1981 to 1983 Mr. Koch developed and conducted training programs for Ohio's Community Action Agencies.

 In 1980 Mr. Koch was appointed special manager of the Ohio Home Energy Assistance Program.  During its initial year he was responsible for the development and approval of its state plan and of all management and client services systems.  He managed the analysis, design, programming, and implementation of the computer system which serves over 300,000 clients.  The system was brought on-line, on-time, under budget, with numerous enhancements not originally budgeted.

 He has been an Adjunct Professor in the College of Business, Franklin University, Columbus, Ohio.  His subject has been Statistics and applied research techniques.  Research projects of his students have led to a presentation at a national medical convention, redesign of sampling procedures and data gathering in a federal compliance agency, public recognition of survey information on downtown development in Columbus, Ohio, and redesign of checkout procedures in a major grocery chain.

 He began studies for the Lutheran ministry in 1951, graduating from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri with the Master of Divinity degree in 1959.  In 1960 he received the Master of Sacred Theology with a major in church history from Concordia Seminary Graduate School.

 Following seminary he served Trinity Lutheran Church, Coal Valley, Illinois and in Lutheran campus ministries in Pullman, Washington (Wash. St. Univ.) and Cincinnati, Ohio (University of Cincinnati).  He has been listed in Who's Who in Religion since 1984.

 An active member in the Lutheran Church, Mr. Koch has conducted national seminars in leadership and management for clergy and laity since 1984.  He has been the project manager for the development of 35 hours of video training for church leaders.  He has also published numerous topic studies and training materials for his church.  He has trained church leaders on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, the DiSC Profile System, the Values Analysis Profile and on the Structural Dynamics Analysis and Power Cycle Models. 

 Mr. Koch continues on the roster of clergy of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.  He is regularly called upon to conduct interim pastorates, particularly for congregations needing to recapture a sense of vision and mission in their work.  He has received training in interim ministry through the Interim Ministry Network.  He is also a certified church consultant in Natural Church Development.  He has served Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod congregations in the Ohio, Indiana and Michigan Districts in this capacity.  Congregations he has most recently served in the Michigan District include St. Michael Lutheran Church, Wayne, MI and Trinity Lutheran Church, Reese. MI.

 Since forming The MENTOR Group he has provided consulting and training services for the following: Lucent Technologies; United Steel Workers--LTV Steel; Bank One, Columbus, NA;  The Bureau of Motor Vehicles, State of Ohio; WENDY'S International, Inc., Columbus; American Electric Power, Inc., Columbus, Ohio; Titan Corporation, San Diego, California; City of Upper Arlington, Upper Arlington, Ohio; LUBRIZOL Inc., Wycliff, Ohio; and smaller businesses in the central Ohio area.

 Mr. Koch joined with his business partner in writing the book, Computerizing The Corporation: The Intimate Link Between People and Machines, Van Nostrand Reinhold, 1990.  The book has received favorable comment whenever reviewed, being listed by ComputerWorld as one of the "Best Books of 1990."  The book was also the first book on computer technology to be presented in an eight-page summary by the international executive book review service, Executive Book Summaries.

 Mr. Koch is a native of Seattle, Washington.  He has attended college and graduate schools at Concordia Jr. College, Portland, Oregon; Concordia Seminary and Graduate School, St. Louis, Missouri; Washington State University, Pullman, Washington; and the University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, Ohio.
