HOW TO FISH

HOW TO FISH (or If You Want to Fish – Go Where the Fish Are)
By Karl Koch

There are two persons in this play: Jeb, a good old country boy, and Cal, a city guy with a house on the lake.  Cal is seated in a comfortable lounge chair on a porch in front of his house when Jeb comes up the walk to visit with him.

Jeb:      Hello, my name is Jeb.  I live down a bit from you and thought I’d come by and get acquainted.

Cal:      Hi, my name is Cal.  We just bought this cabin and moved in yesterday.  It’s nice of you to come around.

Jeb:      Well, we like to know our neighbors.  So how are you folks doing?  Get settled in all right?

Cal:      O sure, no problems.  We’ve got every thing planned out real good.

Jeb:      Really, I’m surprised.  Lot’s of folks need a little time to get adjusted to lake living.

Cal:      Well, if you have any advice I’d appreciate it.

Jeb:      You planning on doing any fishing?

Cal:      For sure we are.  I’ve already developed plans for the “fin-free” ramp for the fish.  You know, so they can make it from the lake to the backyard here.

 Jeb:      Say that again.

Cal:      I figure that if you want to have fish for supper you’ve got to make it easy for them to leave the lake and get up to the cooking area.

Jeb:      You really expect them to come up here to you?

Cal:      Sure do.  I’ve made the place very attractive.  I figure if you’ve got a pretty cabin a lot of fish will come to it.

Jeb:      You think that a pretty cabin will catch a lot of fish?

Cal:      Oh, I put a lot of thought and time into it.  We’ve got that ramp, with a well-lighted walkway, and quite a nice layout for the barbeque area.

Jeb:      Mister, have I got news for you.

Cal:      What, did I do something wrong?

Jeb:      Well, let’s just say you didn’t do anything right.

Cal:      Hey, I put a lot of time and money into attracting fish here.

Jeb:      Yep, but you forgot one thing.  If you want to catch fish you have to go to where the fish are.

Cal:      You mean they don’t come to you?

Jeb:      Not unless somebody has already caught them.  You gotta go to them.

Cal:      How do I go about doing that?

Jeb:      The first thing you have to do is decide to get off your backside.  Then you go to where the fish are.  Come on along with me.  I’ll teach you how to fish.

Cal:      If you know how to fish I guess I better learn from you.  Do I need anything.

Jeb:      Yeah, you better bring along your pole and tackle.

 Cal:      My what?

Jeb:      You don’t have any fishing equipment?

 Cal:      Nope.

Jeb:      Oh Lord, we’re starting out with a beginner.

Cal and Jeb:     And that’s true for all of us.  That’s why we use The Way of the Master to equip us all.
